Hilary Duff Opens Up About Being a Single Parent: “It Sucked For a While”

It’s hard to find someone who doesn’t love Hilary Duff. What’s not to love? Not only did she start her career off as one of Disney’s favorite child stars, but she also grew up in the spotlight with a well-balanced life (unlike a lot of child stars her age). That’s something to be proud of.

Something else she ought to be proud of is her courage. Raising a child by yourself is no picnic, and the Younger star opened up about it recently for the cover of Redbook magazine.

Two years ago, she and hockey player Mike Comrie (who’s being investigated for rape at the moment) separated. And divorce, according to Hilary, sucked: “Some of my friends tell me, ‘God, it must be so nice, you get a break from your kid because you share him.’ I’m divorced, and it sucks,” she said. “Well, it did suck for a while; now it’s just normal. But it’s true, I do get a break. I had Luca by myself for a few weeks, no help, when Mike was on the road, and when he got home I was like, ‘He’s yours! Bye!'”

The juggle between work and life is always going to be a struggle, though.

“I always feel torn or guilty about something,” she said. “I’m not working right now, and at first I stressed about that, like, ‘Oh, I shouldn’t stay still this long.’ And that’s ridiculous. I have a child; it’s totally fine to not be slammed all the time. It feels really good to not be on someone else’s schedule—besides Luca’s. I’m basically his chauffeur!”

The star also said she is in no rush to have another kid. At this point, she’s taking her time and letting the cards fall where they land — including dating. Currently she’s dating singer-songwriter Matthew Koma.

And having a boyfriend has its perks. It keeps the creepers at bay! “I never think being single sucks until I go out in L.A. with my girlfriends and the options are terrible,” she shared. “I really attract the old men!”
