Michelle Obama’s Brother Was Once Accused by Cops of Stealing His Own Bike

Michelle Obama recently told a story about how her brother, Craig Robinson, was accused of stealing his own bicycle by the Chicago police when he was 10 years old.

Michelle, Craig, and their mother Marian Robinson were guests on the Michelle Obama Podcast, where they all opened up about it.

“It was terrifying only because I was always taught that the police are your friends and they’ll believe the truth,” Craig said.

During the incident, two Chicago police officers stopped him while he was riding his bike.

“This guy grabbed my bike and he wouldn’t let it go,” he explained, recalling that they were asking him questions to purposefully shake him up. “I was like, ‘Oh you got this all wrong, this is my bike, don’t worry, this isn’t a stolen bike,’ and he would not believe me.”

“I was absolutely heartbroken,” he said, “And I finally said to him, ‘Listen, you can take me to my house and I will prove to you this is my bike.’”

They ended up bringing him back home, where Marian confronted the officers, who were both black, about why they kept pressing Craig.

One of them eventually admitted he knew her son was telling the truth.

Wow. We need more stories told like this to remind us of the systemic oppression that needs to be examined. Thank you, Craig, for sharing your story.
