Supreme Court: LGBTQ+ Discrimination is Illegal

It’s a big day in D.C. this morning for LGBTQ+ people!

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled today that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which bans sex discrimination, also includes discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

The ruling came in two consolidated cases involving gay men who were fired from their jobs, according to Advocate.com. Those cases were Bostock v. Clayton County and Zarda v. Altitude Express.

One of the cases involved a transgender woman who lost her job, R.G. & G.R. Harris Funeral Homes Inc. v. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

The 6-3 ruling was written by Neil Gorsuch, Donald Trump’s first Supreme Court appointee.

What does this mean? It means that trans people, gay people, queer people, all people, will not be able to be discriminated against at work.

What great news in the midst of a crazy month. Happy Pride!
