MSNBC’s Chris Matthews Abruptly Retires

Chris Matthews announced yesterday that he’s retiring from his longtime role as host of Hardball following allegations that he “inappropriately flirted” with a female guest, which we previously reported.

“I want to start with my headline tonight: I’m retiring,” he said during a broadcast. “This is the last Hardball on MSNBC and obviously this isn’t for a lack of interest in politics.”

He added he’s leaving to make way for “younger generations” who are “improving the workplace.”

As we previously reported, freelance journalist Laura Bassett published a column in GQ, accusing Chris of making inappropriate advances toward her twice as she readied herself to appear on his show.

Though he didn’t address Laura’s allegations, Chris did apologize on Monday night for past comments he made on women’s appearances.

Well, it was a long run. We’ll see what happens next.
