RIP: Model & TV Star B. Smith Dead at 70

Renowned restauranteur and former model, B. Smith, has died after a battle with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. She was 70.

“It is with great sadness that my daughter Dana and I announce the passing of my wife, Barbara Elaine Smith,” her husband, Dan Gasby, wrote on Facebook. “B. died peacefully Saturday, February 22, 2020, at 10:50 pm, of Early-Onset Alzheimer’s Disease in our home in Long Island, New York. She was 70.”

Known by many to be the “black Martha Stewart,” B.’s stylish eatery B. Smith’s has brought in tourists from across the world for years now.

As a model, she was the first African-American woman to be featured on the cover of Mademoiselle. Ten years later, she opened a popular Southern-inspired restaurant on Eighth Avenue, which ended up closing in 2015.

B. also wrote the book B. Smith Cooks Southern-Style, and ultimately launched a slew of products for Bed, Bath, and Beyond.

She will be missed.
