Melanie Griffith Once Had To Pay $80K For Coming to ‘Working Girl’ Set Drunk

Coming drunk to work might not be worth it, and Melanie Griffith learned that the hard way.

Melanie recently opened up about her time on set of the film that made her famous, Working Girl

In a new book about director Mike Nichols’s life, Life Isn’t Everything: Mike Nichols as remembered by 150 of his closest friends, Melanie shared the moment that was perhaps one of the most humbling experiences in her career.

Apparently, the actress upset Mike when she appeared intoxicated on the set of the 1988 classic. She said she was asked to pay $80,000 in compensation for production time lost.

“There were a lot of things that happened on Working Girl that I did that were not right,” she said in the book. “It was the late ’80s. There was a lot going on party-wise in New York. There was a lot of cocaine. There was a lot of temptation.”

The incident was a pivotal moment in her journey toward sobriety. Three weeks after the encounter, she checked into a rehab facility.

“I was never loved unconditionally,” she told Vanity Fair in 1994, as reported by People magazine. “Coke, booze give you a feeling, a physical sensation … a buzz inside your body that takes the place of something you should have had when you were a child.”

Wow! Don’t you just love (and miss) Mike Nichols?
