Y’all remember the sex tape of Rob Lowe that ended up leaking to the public in 1988? Well, in hindsight, the actor says it’s the best thing to ever happen to him because it forced him to clean up his act. 

“It got me sober. Sober got me married,” the actor recently said on The Jess Cagle Show. “I’ve been married 29 years and I have two great sons, so I don’t think any of that happens without going through that scandal.”

He continued, “It was one of the reasons I got sober. I woke up one day and was like, ‘What am I doing with my life? 29 years in.’”

In case you forgot, Rob videotaped himself having sex with a 16-year-old girl (he was 24 at the time).

The event occurred the night before the 1988 Democratic National Convention, and eventually it put his career on pause for a short while. That is, until he landed The West Wing in 1999.

“The problem was, I didn’t make any money off of it like everybody does now,” he added, alluding to similar scandals involving Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton. “I was too stupid.”

Eek! Well at least some sex tapes seem to have a happy ending.
