David Letterman made an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show this week where he confesses that he might have stuck around on network TV about 10 years too long.

David famously quit hosting The Late Show in 2015 after 33 years as a late-night host on CBS and NBC, and is beginning his second season on his laid back Netflix show.

Now, he says that looking back nobody had the guts to fire him, and it took leaving the show for him to realize that there’s more to life than asking some celebrity to “tell us about your pet beaver.”
