Matt Lauer’s Joke About Sleeping With Interns Didn’t Go So Well

Comedy writer Nell Scovell penned an article in 2009 for Vanity Fair about female writers being treated poorly on The Late Show With David Lettermen.

As Page Six reports, Matt Lauer had called Nell after she turned down an invitation from the Today show’s producers to make an appearance. Apparently she told him that she was hesitant because “people want to hear about interns in the bedroom, and I want to talk about gender in the writers’ room.”

“You’re OK if I don’t discuss Dave sleeping with interns?” she said to Matt, who replied with a laugh, “Hey, I couldn’t be held to that high standard.”

She writes, “Matt’s ‘joke’ made me queasy. With apologies, I passed a second time.”

Nell tells the story in her new book, Just the Funny Parts . . . and a Few Hard Truths About Sneaking Into the Hollywood Boys’ Club, which comes out March 20.
