The Little Girl From ‘Titanic’ Is All Grown Up — And She Has Leo Stories!

The little girl from Titanic, with whom Leonardo DiCaprio’s character favors aboard, is an actress named Alexandrea Owens-Sarno, and a couple years ago she sat with BuzzFeed to share her stories on set. And they’re so good!

By the way, Titanic’s 20th anniversary is approaching. So all the more reason to care!

Was the big Titanic reveal a surprise to many of your friends?

Almost all of my friends knew already — a few I have even been friends with since elementary school so knew me back then while I was filming. And they’ve tortured me about it my entire life. I’ve always been “the Titanic girl” in school.

What does being “the Titanic girl” in school entail? Are we talking, like, people singing “My Heart Will Go On” when you walked into homeroom?

It’s mostly just people saying, “Hey, I saw you on TV last night,” or they would call me Cora. Sometimes they would ask me to bring in the DVD so we could watch the parts I’m in in class. One time, my friends asked me to stand next to the television while we were watching it so that they could compare how I look now as opposed to then.

Do you still get recognized as Cora as an adult? Or, at least, did you get recognized before BuzzFeed blew your spot up?

Well, right after Titanic, I got an agent. I was auditioning for movies, but it was a really hard time for me. People were recognizing me on the street all the time; it was really overwhelming and difficult. And people would ask for my autograph, but when you’re 8, 9 years old, it’s just like, “Ugh, who are you, I shouldn’t talk to strangers!” I actually stopped pursuing the professional side of acting — but I’m living in Los Angeles now, doing the L.A. thing. I’ve had a couple people recognize me in the past few years. I went to a bar with some friends, recently, for example; our server came by, took our drink orders, and when she came back with them, she said, “I have a really weird question for you.” Yes, she asked me if I was in Titanic, and she full-on said to me, “I was going to walk up to you and just say, ‘You’re still my best girl, Cora,’ but I didn’t want to be wrong and then feel like an idiot.” But I really wish she had, because that would have made my entire life.

Has anyone ever tried to use that as a pickup line?

No, I’m still waiting on that one.

Fingers crossed that’ll happen now that your identity is out there.

I mean, hopefully. That’s really what I’m most excited about all this attention. Take me on a date!

Can you still dance a jig really good though? If someone’s taking you out to the club, are they going to get a good Irish dance?

I don’t know if I can do the jig anymore! I think if I watched and really just dedicated time to relearning it, maybe I could do it. But you also can’t do it by yourself. When you’re getting, like, twirled around by Leonardo DiCaprio, you just go with the moment.
