Madonna opened up about her life as a mother as well as her charity, Raising Malawi, in a new interview with People magazine. The mom of six has a lot to say, especially about her adoption — the four youngest of her kids call her “Mambo.”

But her family — Lourdes, 20, Rocco, 17, David, 11, Mercy, 11, and 5-year-old twins Estere and Stella — are all but one.

“Every newspaper said I kidnapped him,” Madonna reflected on bringing David home from Malawi in 2008. “In my mind, I was thinking, ‘Wait a minute. I’m trying to save somebody’s life. Why are you all s—-ing on me right now?’ I did everything by the book. That was a real low point for me. I would cry myself to sleep.”

When adoption Mercy, Madonna said Malawi gave her difficulties because she’d just divorced from Guy Ritchie and they said “I was not capable of raising a child. The way I was treated — that sexist behavior — was ridiculous. I’ve had some pretty dark moments, but I’m a survivor,” adding, “It’s complicated, but it’s so worth it.”
