People had a lot to say after Bill Maher used the N-word on his show Real Time With Bill Maher on Friday night, and Kevin Hart is no exception.

During an interview on The Breakfast Club radio show on Tuesday, Kevin had mixed feelings about the incident. He defended Bill’s overall character, and said that he didn’t think he was racist, saying, “I’ve seen Bill Maher come to the defense of black people on several occasions.”

He did go on to explain that the comment was unacceptable, though. He said, “That’s a bad judgment. Granted, I don’t think Bill Maher is a racist, but that’s a bad judgment.”

He added:

“It’s inappropriate and it’s not right. To say that and to say it the way you said it as comfortable as you said it in a joking form, you’re wrong. Granted, you can issue all the apologies you want … you know he says it around friends. It’s not something that he’s not going to say anymore. But for you to say it on your platform, that’s tacky.”

Bill’s offensive comment happened in response to his guest Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse’s question, “Would you like to come work in the field with us?”

He responded with, “Work in the fields? Senator, I am a house n—er.”

His words ignited major backlash online, for obvious reasons. The host has since issued an apology. In a statement, he said:

“Friday nights are always my worst night of sleep because I’m up reflecting on the things I should or shouldn’t have said on my live show. Last night was a particularly long night as I regret the word I used in the banter of a live moment. The word was offensive and I regret saying it and am very sorry.”
