Sir Roger Moore, best known for playing James Bond, has passed away. He was 89 years old.

Sir Roger’s family announced the sad news via a statement on Twitter. It read, “With the heaviest of hearts, we must share the awful news that our father, Sir Roger Moore, passed away today. We are all devastated.” The actor died after a “a short but brave battle with cancer.” See the full statement below:

The iconic star took over the role of 007 from Sean Connery. Sir Roger brought a more humorous edge to the character than his predecessor, and led the franchise for seven movies in a row, the longest run of any actor. He was also the oldest actor to play the part, taking it on at age 46.

Sir Roger was also known for his charity work. The late Audrey Hepburn introduced him to Unicef, and in 1991 he was appointed as a goodwill ambassador. Fellow Unicef ambassador Ewan McGregor said in a statement,  “Thank you, Roger, for having championed so tirelessly the rights of all children for the last 26 years. You’ve shown that we all have the power to make a change to the lives of the most vulnerable children.”

Sir Roger was knighted on June 14, 2003. He passed in Switzerland, and in accordance with his wishes, there will be a private funeral in Monaco.

We send our heartfelt condolences to the family.
