‘Stranger Things’ Star Shannon Purser Comes Out as Bisexual

Stranger Things and Riverdale star Shannon Purser, 19, came out as bisexual last night in an emotional note on Twitter.

“I don’t normally do this, but I figure now is as good a time as any to get personal. I’ve only just recently come out as bisexual to my family and friends,” she wrote. “It’s something I am still processing and trying to understand and I don’t like talking about it too much. I’m very very new to the LGBT community. I have never heard the term “queerbaiting” in my life until today. That being said, I have never ever wanted to alienate anyone and my tweets are thoughtless. I wasn’t referring to all the beronica shippers, just the ones who had been particularly cruel to me personally.”

Shannon was referring to some hate she got after an early episode of Riverdale where “Veronica” and “Betty” share an extremely performative kiss, which angered some members of the LGBT community.

She later tweeted to co-star Cole Sprouse about “angry beronica stans,” which brought about a slew of angry messages about representation and the use of faux-lesbianism for ratings boosts — all which inspired her to come out.

She continued in the latest message: “I know what it’s like to have anxiety about it. Especially trying to come to terms with it and my faith. It can be really scary … But it’s gonna be OK. You’re going to be OK. No, you’re going to be great.”
