Dorothy Mengering, the beloved mother of David Letterman, passed away last night at the age of 95.

Known to America as “Dave’s Mom,” Dorothy was a recurring guest on her son’s Late Show, delivering top 10 lists, Olympic correspondence, and cooking segments from her home in Indiana. Her cooking lessons were so popular that she published the cookbook, Home Cooking’ with Dave’s Mom in 1996. She had told the New York Times:

“I couldn’t believe how it all took off. I think it’s about the idea of mom and of a family. People are eager for families to be like they used to be. Even though there are lots of working moms and single-parent families now, you can still be a family in spite of the size and form it takes.”

Dorothy’s death came on the eve of David’s 70th birthday today. We are sending him lots of love and condolences.
