Abigail Breslin Opens Up About Her Sexual Assault: ‘I Knew My Assailant’
Oscar-nominated actress Abigail Breslin is about to star in the remake of Dirty Dancing on ABC, and for Sexual Assault Awareness month, the 20-year old bravely opened up about her own experience with sexual assault in a post on Instagram.
In the post, she schooled people on consent, writing: “You are not obligated to have sex with someone that you’re in a relationship with. Dating is not consent. Marriage is not consent.”
She also captioned it with “I knew my assailant.”
After posting her experiences, other people felt inspired to write about their own.
“My boyfriend in high school sexually abused me for a year. I was 17,” one commenter said. “I’m now 24 and I’m just now realizing what he did to me was abuse. I wanted to wait for marriage, but he used his love for me as an argument to get me to have sex with him. He would guilt me into it. This still haunts me to this day. Thank you for sharing this. It’s so important.”
