One of the stars of MTV’s Newport Harbor: The Real Orange County, Clay Adler, shot himself in the head during a trip to the desert with friends. He was 27.

According to TMZ, Clay and his pals were shooting in the desert last month, and in the middle of the firing he apparently turned the gun and shot himself in the head. He later died in the hospital the next day.

A source said there were no drugs or alcohol in his system at the time, but that Clay did struggle with mental illness in the past.

Clay was also friends with Jennifer Lawrence, and had met the actress when they were first starting out in Hollywood, reports TMZ.

An avid surfer, friends and family honored him with a paddle out in Newport Beach last weekend.
