Bob Iger Spills the Details on ‘Han Solo’ Star Wars Movie

Disney CEO Bob Iger is spilling the beans on the future of Star Wars after Carrie Fisher’s (i.e. Princess Leia) death.

“We’re starting talk about what could happen after Episode IX. About what could be another decade-and-a-half of Star Wars stories,” he said during a talk in Santa Monica, later confirming that The Last Jedi is not going to change in the wake of Carrie’s death. “When we bought Lucasfilm, we were going to make three films — Episodes VIIVIII and IX. We had to deal with tragedy at the end of 2016. Carrie appears throughout VIII. We are not changing VIII to deal with her passing. Her performance remains as it is in VIII. In Rogue One, we had some digital character. We are not doing that with Carrie.”

Carrie Fisher had just wrapped filming and was on her way back to Los Angeles when she had a fatal heart attack last Christmas.

As for the new Han Solo movie, Bob says the movie is going to span the Star Wars rogue’s years from 18 to 24. Alden Ehrenreich will play Han Solo, and in the film he’s going to meet his best friend Chewbacca, played by Joonas Suotamo. He will also find his ship, The Millennium Falcon.

Bob is going to extend his tenure as CEO to July 2019, saying he wanted to leave “”in a good position for my successor, whoever that is.”

“Succession is a complicated thing,” he added. “We [the board] felt we wanted to spend more time on succession … and we mutually agreed to another year.”

At Disneyland and Disney World (in Anaheim and Orlando), plans for Star Wars Lands are underway, which will include an opportunity for patrons to ride in the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon and go for “joy rides.”

The young Han Solo movie stars Donald Glover as a young Lando Calrissian, Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson in a mentor role, Thandie Newton, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are directing the film, which hits theaters May 25, 2018.
