While Rachel Maddow Celebrated Getting Trump’s Tax Returns, NBC Wasn’t So Happy

Beloved MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow was the definition of word-of-mouth journalism the other night when she tweeted she had Donald Trump’s tax returns and for viewers to tune in. Needless to say, we all did — though reviews of the actual returns (which were only two pages) were mixed.

The anchor appeared on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and said that while her report got an extra boost in ratings, the real celebration was when she got home to her longtime partner Susan Mikula.

“I got home last night and Susan bought me new sneakers,” she said. “She went out, when she found out that I got the scoop, and she bought me sneakers. I don’t know where she got them in our neighborhood at seven o’clock at night. She said ‘These are your you got the president’s tax returns sneakers.’ This is now a bounty for whoever gets the rest of them, I will now give you these shoes.”

The two met in 1999 while working odd jobs — Rachel was hired to do yard work on her property in the Berkshires.

But while Rachel was celebrating, execs at MSNBC’s parent company NBC were foaming at the mouth. According to a source at Page Six, people at NBC found out about the Trump tax returns on Twitter, at the same time the general public did. They weren’t very happy about that.

“[MSNBC president] Phil Griffin was trying to undermine [NBC News president] Noah Oppenheim. There was never a conversation. They overplayed their hand in a huge way,” the source said. “It’s their cable network, but it’s still NBC News. [NBC] did not appreciate being kept in the dark . . . To hype such a big story and not really deliver is a bit embarrassing. Airing a story you’ve hyped 20 minutes into your broadcast makes it a lot less of a ‘breaking news’ story.”

However, a rep for NBC came out to deny there is any tension between Phil and Noah: “They’ve been friends for 20 years — ever since Phil hired Noah straight out of college to work on ‘Hardball.’ They’re super tight.”
