Sunday in the Park With George is arguably one of Stephen Sondheim’s greatest works. The original production was a masterpiece, starring Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters in the starring roles.

And it’s current revival on Broadway stars one of Hollywood’s heaviest weights: Jake Gyllenhaal, who plays Georges Seurat, (i.e. “George), Mandy’s original part — so naturally when Mandy came to watch Jake’s performance, he was watching with a judging eye.

But as it turns out, Page Six discovered that what could have been catastrophe ended up becoming one of the most moving moments backstage. “After the show, Patinkin encountered Jake…” a spy said. “Patinkin grabbed him into a tight embrace and both actors burst into tears.”

Mandy even said, “I managed to keep it together during the whole show, but I knew I wasn’t getting out of here without a good cry.”
