Beauty & The Beast is Banned From Malaysia Due to its ‘Gay’ Character

While Disney had planned on shelving the release of the new live action Beauty and the Beast in mainly Muslim Malaysia, despite the country approving it with a few minor censors, the country’s main cinema chains has now said they won’t screen it all.

As reported by Page Six, even Film Censorship Board chairman Abdul Halim Abdul Hamid was a bit confused as to why the film was banned, since it was approved by the board. Scenes that promote homosexuality are forbidden in the country: “We have approved it but there is a minor cut involving a gay moment. It is only one short scene but it is inappropriate because many children will be watching this movie,” he said to the Associated Press.

Even Russia, a country known for its obvious antigay laws, approved the film but banned children under 16 from watching it.
