Savannah Guthrie Allegedly Cuts Maternity Leave Short Due to NBC’s Bad Ratings

Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, who’s been on maternity leave was reportedly asked to come back to work four days early because higher ups at NBC were stressing out due to the show’s low ratings.

“The show was in a free fall. She initially announced that she’d be returning on March 3, but they were in a panic . . . and called her back early,” an insider told Page Six. Savannah had surprised Matt Lauer on-air last week with her return, days after Lester Hold and Bryant Gumble were filling in for her.

“Their bro-show didn’t work,” the insider said. “They needed Savannah to bail them out, so they rushed her from maternity leave. NBC claimed it was because of the influx of news, but the reality is that the show was down double-digits and they needed her.” But unfortunately, even with Savannah’s return, the numbers were still sinking.

According to a press release sent out by ABC on Tuesday, Good Morning America had the largest total viewer lead over Today in 14 months. A source at NBC pointed out to Page Six that the numbers are result of the Oscars.

GMA has been down double-digits in the key demo [ages 25 to 54] for months while Today has been posting gains. Last week, ABC had the Oscars broadcast, which historically gives GMA a huge boost.”

However, another source from Today begs to differ, claiming it’s “been number one in the key demo for 20 straight months, its best winning streak in more than four years, and its advantages over GMA have reached five-year highs.”
