It’s no secret that Phil Collins isn’t exactly a textbook dad. Having 5 children by 3 different wives, it’s no surprise that his daughter, Lily would have some things to say on the subject.

In her new book, Unfiltered: No Shame, No Regrets, Just Me, a project she described as “having her diary published”, the star penned an open letter to her dad expressing her deepest feelings. She wrote:

“I forgive you for not always being there when I needed and for not being the dad I expected. I forgive the mistakes you made. And although it may seem like it’s too late, it’s not. There’s still so much time to move forward. We all make choices and, although I don’t excuse some of yours, at the end of the day we can’t rewrite the past.”

Lily added that she “accepts and honors” the emotions she had over her dad’s shortcomings, and addressed her eating disorder, which she says was partially brought on by Phil’s divorce from Orianne Ceveyin 2008. She wrote:

“Not only did I start viewing myself differently physically, but I began limiting my happiness by controlling my eating habits. Many of my deepest insecurities stem from these issues with my dad.”

Clearly Phil made some mistakes. Lily was only 5 year old when Phil split with her mom, and he reportedly ended that relationship via fax. Ouch.

Forgiving him and sharing her feelings was super brave. Hopefully it will serve to help others going through similar experiences.
