Sometimes you stay incredibly close to your exes, but other times you don’t.

According to an interview with Howard Stern on Wednesday, John Mellencamp is the latter.

“Oh women hate me,” he told the shock jock. “I loved Meg Ryan. She hates me to death.” The two had dated for three years before separating in August 2014. “I think it’s because I’m a child. I throw fits, I gripe, I complain. I’m moody. Every bad thing that a fella can be, that’s me.”

Though he says he’s tried to mend the relationship, “she just doesn’t want anything to do with me. And I can’t blame her.”

At the time of the split, it was believed the cause was due to distance. But clearly things were rocky for a while. But hey, at the end of the day you grow apart from each other and all we can hope for is to one day find the reason.
