Stop it! The Best Picture Mix-Up Likely Happened Because of a Tweet

We’ve heard of Twitter possibly saving the world, but to totally turn it upside down?

It’s been a couple days since the best picture mix-up at the Oscars where Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were mistakenly handed the wrong envelope before announcing best picture to the wrong movie. Now, details are surfacing as to what actually happened.

Turns out, it may have been because of a tweet!

The Wall Street Journal posted a screenshot that has since been deleted of PricewaterhouseCoopers managing partner Brian Cullinan showing Emma Stone backstage after accepting her award for Best Actress. We all now know that Warren’s envelope said “Emma Stone: La La Land.”

The picture was taken around the time Brian should have been handing the Best Picture envelope to Warren.

Brian and his colleague Martha Ruiz are the two people at the Oscars trusted with the task of handing off the winning envelopes to the appropriate parties. They both stand on opposite sides of the stage so each of them can be ready to hand presenters correct information in case something happens.

PricewatterhouseCoopers tweeted that they were “investigating” how the mix-up could have happened, but what we do know is that Brian clearly gave Warren the wrong envelope. While there is no official judgment or answer yet, PWC did put the blame on Brian and Martha:

“Once the error occurred, protocols for correcting it were not followed through quickly enough by Mr. Cullinan or his partner,” they tweeted. Now that’s kinda embarrassing.
