Everyone is Talking About Brie Larson’s Silent Protest Against Casey Affleck

ABC/Oscars

Everyone is talking about the silent protest Brie Larson enacted during the Oscars when she had to hand the best actor award to Casey Affleck, who has been accused of sexually assaulting women.

Brie, who is an advocate for sexual assault, stood by his side and refused to applaud when he accepted the award.

The stories of Casey harassing two women surfaced last fall during the making of his film I’m Still Here. The women who filed suit against him have been silenced throughout the awards season, except when celebrities like Constance Wu courageously bring it up.

At last year’s Oscars, when Brie won an award for best actress, after Lady Gaga’s performance of “Till it Happens to You,” (a song about sexual assault) Brie hugged all of the background performers who’d backed Gaga up — all of them were sexual assault victims.

It’s clear that Brie was making a statement, and it seems like Twitter had her back.
