Why Drew Barrymore Was Intimidated to Star in a Zombie TV Show

Drew Barrymore is a TV star now, thanks to Netflix!

Her new show Santa Clarita Diet is about a woman who accidentally becomes a zombie, therefore she must kill and eat people. Thankfully, her husband, begrudgingly of course, helps her pursue these efforts — now that’s love!

It’s dark, funny, and full of heart (surprisingly, being a zombie flick and all). It’s exactly what you get when you mix a Drew Barrymore story with a zombie flick. But entering television wasn’t an easy thing for Drew.

“I had never done it before,” she said to Elle Magazine, “so I did ask Victor (the show runner), ‘What the hell happens if you write a script and the actor reads it and they don’t like it?’ On a film, you know what you’re signed up for. I was very intimidated by that.”

Ultimately, Netflix turned out to be a phenomenon too good to pass up. “Streaming is where the current climate is,” Drew pointed out. “People are staying home, they like to be able to watch what they want, eat what they want, include who they want—you know, the agoraphobic millennial style! Netflix are the cool kids.”

When describing her character, she said, “She’s a bit of a feminist, in a very wrong way—she’s empowered. You piss a woman off…. I think Sheila, and women right now, are having a moment where they just feel like expressing themselves.”
