It’s no secret that Hollywood holds some pretty impossible standards for how women should look, but clearly we don’t even know the half of it. Even gorgeous and crazy talented actresses face ridiculous criticism.

Debra Messing sat down with ELLE Magazine and opened up about some of her own horror stories. She told ELLE, “I’d never been in a film before. I was doing a love scene with Keanu Reeves. We started filming and the very famous director screamed ‘Cut’ and said, ‘How quickly can we get a plastic surgeon in here? Her nose is ruining my movie.'”

The unnamed director was Alfonso Arau, and that wasn’t the only disgraceful thing he did to Debra. He required her to do a nude scene that was not in her contract, and just before they shot it, he lifted the sheet that was covering her to get a glimpse. She told ELLE, “He dropped the sheet on top of me like a used Kleenex, then walked away without a word. It turns out, after all this trauma, the only part of my body that’s seen naked in the film is my back.”

Debra is proud of who she is, though, and doesn’t plan to give into pressure to be perfect. She said, “I have a strong nose, I have small breasts. I’m a fucking original. My nose and I have come this far, and like Barbra Streisand I’m defiantly keeping it.”
