Yas Queen! Britain’s Longest Reigning Monarch Celebrates w/New Sapphire Portrait

6 FEB: A portrait of the Queen by British photographer David Bailey has been reissued for her Sapphire Jubilee, marking 65 years on the throne. In the photo, the Queen wears sapphire jewelry given to her by king George VI as a wedding gift in 1947. The Queen has become the first British monarch to reach a sapphire jubilee. The portrait was among a series taken by Bailey in 2014, with one released for the Queen’s 88th birthday that year. She became the UK’s longest-reigning monarch in 2015 at the age of 89. In the portrait, the Queen wear a necklace made of 16 large oblong sapphires surrounded by diamonds with a matching pair of drop earnings. It is tradition for the Queen to spend Accession Day – as the anniversary of the day she became monarch is officially known – in private at her Sandringham Estate and return to Buckingham Palace a few days later. Large-scale jubilee celebrations are expected to be reserved for the Platinum Jubilee in 2022, when the monarch will mark 70 years. @bbcnews @theroyalfamily !! #SapphireJubilee #queen #royal #davidbailey #highjewelry #finejewelry #hautejoaillerie #life #sapphire #diamond #gold #jewelry #instagood #instagram #instalike #instamood #instadaily #instafollow #inspiration #luxury #luxurylife #luxurydesign #luxuryjewelry #amazing #fabulous #dream #happy #gorgeous #beautiful #uk

In September 2015, it became official that Queen Elizabeth II broke the record as the longest-reigning British monarch in history. Now, she’s surpassed yet another milestone: She’s the first to ever have a 65th anniversary.

Naturally the country is going bananas over the event, so of course they wanted to bedazzle their royal highness with sapphires!

The 90-year old Queen looks fabulous in her new set of sapphire jewelry, in a re-released portrait taken by photographer David Bailey. She received the jewels as a wedding gift from her father, King George VI in 1947.

Apparently, the Queen is to spend the day privately in Sandringham as it also coincides with the anniversary of the death of her father. According to People, insiders say that it’s totally normal for her to quietly evade anniversary celebrations.

“She’s naturally shy and is the opposite of showy,” historian Robert Lacey said. “And, of course, the anniversaries of the accession remind her of her father’s premature death. There is only so many of these landmark dates that people will want to mark. I’m sure she would rather people were asking why isn’t it being celebrated rather than, ‘Oh no, not another royal anniversary.’ She was plays safe — and that is a good instinct.”
