Oscars 2017: 3 Black Actresses Nominated in the Same Category for the First Time EVER!

Thank goodness movies got a little diverse over the last year. Things were starting to look so white we had to bring sunglasses to the theatre!

For the first time ever, three black actresses (Viola Davis for Fences, Naomie Harris for Moonlight, and Octavia Spencer for Hidden Figures) have been nominated in the “Leading Actress” category.

In 2007, three black actresses were nominated in the same category of “Supporting Actress” — Jennifer Hudson, Adriana Barraza, and Rinko Kikuchiand. Eventually, J-Hud won for Dreamgirls!

This year alone, seven people of color were nominated in the acting categories. Last year, there were NONE.
