Laura Dern Talks Playing a Feminist in ‘Jurassic Park’

Laura Dean knows how to play strong women. She’s been doing it for decades now, and trust us, she’s well aware of the power of positive role models in movies.

In a recent interview with Hollywood Reporter during a table discussion at Sundance, the actress described what it was like playing a feminist in Jurassic Park — the only female in a group of dinosaur-chasing male scientists.

“It was 1993 and it was this big dinosaur movie. And I was a feminist in the middle of it,” Laura said. “There were these amazing quotes that people have been using lately, these great feminist statements. Now, it’s however long later, and you’re kind of looking for movies where there is a female protagonist turning lights back on, the guys are stuck and she’s out there making things happen.

“You have to battle and say, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if the girl went and did that’ and they’re like no, that’s crazy talk. But we did that. In the ‘40s Rosalind Russell did it. Barbara Stanwyck did it. So it’s amazing that you have to keep reinventing things that have already been done.”

We love you, Laura! Keep chasing them dinosaurs (and we don’t mean the CGI kind).
