Tiger Tests Positive for the Coronavirus at the Bronx Zoo

Well, so much for animals being immune to the novel coronavirus.

According to the Wildlife Conservation Society, a tiger at the Bronx Zoo in New York has tested positive for the virus.

Nadia, a 4-year-old female Malayan tiger, was tested by the USDA’s National Veterinary Services Laboratory after she and six other cats at the zoo developed a dry cough.

The WCS added that all cats are expected to recover.

As CNN reports, Nadia is the first known animal to have tested positive in the United States.

“Though they have experienced some decrease in appetite, the cats at the Bronx Zoo are otherwise doing well under veterinary care and are bright, alert, and interactive with their keepers,” the WCS said in the statement. “It is not known how this disease will develop in big cats since different species can react differently to novel infections, but we will continue to monitor them closely and anticipate full recoveries.”

Wow, well we hope the virus stays contained at least. Thankfully, we all should be staying safe at home!
