This Woman Works as a Stand-In Mom at Gay Weddings

How cute is this?!

An Oklahoma City woman named Sara Cunningham works as an officiant at weddings, but according to People magazine she encountered a heartbreaking theme when it came to same-sex couples.

There were occasions when homophobic parents wouldn’t attend their LGBTQ children’s weddings. So, last year Sara thought of a way to help and offered to be a stand-in mom at weddings when real mothers opted out.

“If you need a mom to attend your same sex wedding because your biological mom won’t, call me,” she posted on Facebook. “I’m there. I’ll be your biggest fan. I’ll even bring the bubbles.”

The response was overwhelming, she told People. “Countless” couples wanted a proxy mom, she said to the outlet, and “other supportive moms and dads offered to be surrogate parents at same-sex weddings.”

“The ripple effect has just been astounding,” she added. “It really touched a chord with a lot of people.”
