Angelina Jolie Reflects On Her ‘Wild’ Days In Hollywood

Angelina Jolie has been through it all. The child of actress Marcheline Bertrand and actor Jon Voight, she grew up within the heart of Tinseltown.

Now, the star is opening up to Harper’s Bazaar about her wild-child days and what she’s learned.

“The part of us that is free, wild, open, curious can get shut down by life,” she said. When asked how she handles being misunderstood, Angelina points to her tattoo that reads, “A prayer for the wild at heart kept in cages.”

The genesis of the tattoo came when she was 20 and driving with her mom, who mentioned the quote by playwright Tennessee Williams.

“We drove to a tattoo parlor and I got it inked on my left arm,” she recalled. “What she did for me that night was to remind me that the wild within is all right and a part of me.”

Still, the wild days have passed: “My children know my true self, and they have helped me to find it again and embrace it.”

She added, “Labeling people and putting them into boxes isn’t freedom. Difference and diversity are what I value most — in my family and in others. I don’t want to live in a world where everyone is the same, and I imagine that’s true for everyone reading this. I want to meet people I’ve never met before and learn things I don’t know. The challenge today is to embrace our differences. And not to be fooled by efforts to divide us or make us fear others. We’re seeing a retreat of values worldwide.”

We’re sure Angelina is passing that knowledge down to her own kids.
