Elton John’s upcoming book, Me, is revealing a lot of personal stories most fans haven’t heard.

One such story took place in 2005 when the star was gearing up to celebrate his union with longtime partner David Furnish with a civil partnership — the same day same-sex unions had become legal in England.

“I was as happy as I could ever remember being,” he writes, according to the Daily Mail. “And that was the moment my mother turned up, in character as a raving sociopath.”

According to the book, he knew that something was off when his mother and stepfather arrived at his Old Windsor home and refused to leave the car.

“Despite various entreaties to come into the house, they just sat there, stony-faced,” he writes. “There, Mum announced she wouldn’t be joining the convoy of cars setting off for Windsor nor would she be coming to the private lunch afterwards.”

“Oh great,” he recalled. “The most important day of my life and one of Mum’s moods appeared to be upon us.”

How awful to hear this! But also, isn’t it so relatable to hear such a global superstar share stories like this? Read more excerpts at the Daily Mail.
