David Spade Says Kate Spade Wouldn’t Have Killed Herself ‘Five Minutes Later’

It’s been over a year since Kate Spade took her life, and now her brother-in-law, David Spade, is rehashing some old memories and revealing interesting facts about his family’s life.

“Katy was so funny,” the comedian told the New York Times. “I don’t know if agoraphobic is the word, but she didn’t like to mingle a lot; she’d have people at her house and she was always so funny.”

He added, “I feel like Katy wouldn’t have [committed suicide], five minutes later, but these things happen and there’s no going back.”

Declared a suicide by hanging, her death followed a lengthy battle with anxiety and depression, according to her husband, Andy.

David honored Kate with a $100,000 donation to the National Alliance on Mental Illness soon after she died.
