Democratic presidential hopeful, Beto O’Rourke, just revealed he and his wife are descended from slave owners. According to him, that discovery has inspired him to instill drastic policy change and reparations.

In a post on Medium, Beto shared that his paternal great-great-great-grandfather Andrew Cowan Jasper listed two women, Rose and Eliza, among his possessions in the 1850s. His maternal great-great-great-grandfather likely owned slaves, too, and his wife Amy had an ancestor who also was a slave owner.

“[My ancestors] were able to build wealth on the backs and off the sweat of others, wealth that they would then be able to pass down to their children and their children’s children,” he wrote, while acknowledging that the descendants of people like Rose and Eliza have suffered continued repercussions in the subsequent years.
