Scarlett Johansson Says, As An Actress, She Should Be Allowed To Play ‘Any Role’

Scarlett Johansson has responded to criticism that by taking non-white, non-cisgender roles, she is taking opportunities away from queer actors to play those roles.

Of course, the industry has changed tremendously from when she began as a teen, and the actress saw it full force after accepting a role as a transgender man in the upcoming film Rub & Tug. Following backlash from activists, Scarlett dropped out of the film.

“You know, as an actor, I should be allowed to play any person, or any tree, or any animal because that is my job and the requirements of my job,” she explained in an interview with As If magazine. “I feel like it’s a trend in my business and it needs to happen for various social reasons, yet there are times it does get uncomfortable when it affects the art because I feel art should be free of restrictions.”

Hmm… we’re sure this is going to be an unpopular opinion. What’s yours? Share in the comments below.
