Whoopi Goldberg had thought she caught a cold last fall when she landed in the hospital for nearly a month, with doctors telling her that she had a 30 percent chance of dying.

As she came to find out from her doctors, the iconic actress was diagnosed with pneumonia in both lungs. She also had sepsis.

“I’m very, very lucky,” she told People magazine. While in the hospital, Whoopi had to have her lungs drained twice via a procedure called thoracentesis.

“The doctor told me, ‘Listen, you’re not going anywhere tomorrow and you’re not going anywhere next week because you are really sick,” she reflected, adding, “It’s going to be a while before I’m back to 100 percent. It really took me down, but I’m getting there.”
