Special shout out to Al Roker for his honest, insightful and inspiring interview for the new cover story of Guideposts. I have had the great honor of working for the last two years with Al and Deborah Roberts first when they were inaugural honorees last year and then again a few months ago when they served as Honorary Chairs of the ADAPT Leadership Awards benefiting over 18,000 families, children and adults with disabilities through ADAPT Community Network. There is an honesty and a sense of integrity that comes through loud and clear whenever I get to see Al and Deborah and this new interview is the latest in their advocacy which all parents can relate to in a very big way. Al Roker is one proud dad.

The Today anchorman was full of emotions, recently boasting about his 17-year-old son, Nick, in an interview with Us Weekly. He shares his son with fellow journalist Deborah Roberts.

“He’s one of those people that doesn’t let anything stand in his way,” Al said. “I don’t think he acknowledges whatever issues he’s got. ‘I’m just going to do this.’ [It’s] so great,” adding, “Last night, we went to go see the Avengers: Endgame [movie]. You know, you’re in a movie, it’s not a lot of talking, but you’re together and then talking about it afterwards.”

In another interview with Guidepost, the weather anchor explained that Nick has special needs and is somewhere on the spectrum and maybe obsessive-compulsive.

“Nick blossomed, far more than Deborah or I could have ever expected, given his original iffy prognosis,” he added. “I can’t begin to take credit for who Nick is and who he might become. All sorts of specialists can tell you about limitations for this and that. Nick never got that message.”

“Nick is a hard worker; he’s got a great sense of humor; he’s outgoing and a good swimmer; he’s developing a pretty good top-of-the-key basketball shot. He takes chess lessons a couple times a week, and he does OK. He’s also very affectionate — like his grandfather — and full of love to share.”
