Joe Biden Officially Announces His Run For President
Former Vice President Joseph R. Biden announced today that he will be running for president, vying to become the Democratic nominee that will ultimately beat Donald Trump in 2020.
The 76-year-old is set to “offer himself as a levelheaded leader for a country wracked by political conflict,” as The New York Times describes. Though there are many people out there who wonder if he has the tenacity and track record to beat Trump.
Joe dropped a video outlining his reasons for running by recalling the white supremacist march through Charlottesville, Va., in 2017 — rather than giving details on policy ideas and legislation.
Apparently, the key moment when Joe decided to run was after Trump’s comment that there were “very fine people on both sides” at Charlottesville. In that moment, Joe said, “I knew the threat to our nation was unlike any I’d ever seen in my lifetime.”
“We are in the battle for the soul of this nation,” he said in the video. “I believe history will look back on four years of this president and all he embraces as an aberrant moment in time. But if we give Donald Trump eight years in the White House, he will forever and fundamentally alter the character of this nation, who we are, and I cannot stand by and watch that happen.”
Of course, Trump decided to respond by calling him “Sleepy Joe” on Twitter.
Welcome to the race Sleepy Joe. I only hope you have the intelligence, long in doubt, to wage a successful primary campaign. It will be nasty – you will be dealing with people who truly have some very sick & demented ideas. But if you make it, I will see you at the Starting Gate!
