Last year, a woman came forward to accuse Aziz Ansari of sexual misconduct in an article published on Babe.net. The comedian has remained under the radar since that time.

While doing a new comedy set in New York this week, Aziz addressed the situation openly for the first time since releasing a statement in the immediate aftermath: “It made me think about a lot, and I hope I’ve become a better person,” he told the audience.

According to Vulture, he told the audience the reason he hasn’t talked about it much is because he wanted time to process and determine what to say. He also added, “It’s a terrifying thing to talk about.”

“There were times I felt really upset and humiliated and embarrassed, and ultimately I just felt terrible this person felt this way,” he said. “But you know, after a year, how I feel about it is, I hope it was a step forward. It made me think about a lot, and I hope I’ve become a better person.”

Aziz also told a story about having a conversation with a male friend in which the friend said Aziz’s story made him rethink every date he’s been on: “If that has made not just me but other guys think about this, and just be more thoughtful and aware and willing to go that extra mile, and make sure someone else is comfortable in that moment, that’s a good thing.”
