Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Activist Parents Talk ‘Hamilton’ And Puerto Rico

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s parents are getting into the activism scene and vowing to continue to fight for the rights of immigrants. Currently, their son is playing Alexander Hamilton in their birthplace of Puerto Rico.

According to Page Six, Lin-Manuel’s dad Luiz Miranda was 18 when he moved from Puerto Rico to New York where he met and fell in love with fellow NYU student Luz Towns. They’ve been married for 40 years now.

By the end of the limited run of Hamilton in San Juan, Lin-Manuel will have raised $15 million following the hurricane that devastated the island — as well as their family home — in 2017. He has teamed up with the Flamboyan Arts Fund to support the arts on the island.

“Lin-Manuel has seen us give back all his life. He knows it’s not about working for wealth, but to make the city and our community much stronger,” his mom told Page Six, later reminiscing on when she saw Hamilton for the first time.

“During the first workshop, before it opened, I couldn’t even talk, I was so bereft. It was so powerful for me, I couldn’t talk.”
