Spike Lee Makes It Clear That He’s ‘Been Hiring Women’ Forever

Spike Lee wants it on the record that he’s been hiring strong women in his films for a while now. The director’s proclamation came after Regina King’s Golden Globe-winning performance in If Beale Street Could Talk.

Regina said in her acceptance speech that she promises to have “50 percent women” on everything she produces. That’s when Spike decided to speak.

“I’ve been hiring women way before Regina made that speech,” Spike said at a reception for his film BlacKkKlansman,” according to Page Six.

“Go back to my crew list . . . 1986, She’s Gotta Have It. School Daze — [Black Panther costumer] Ruth Carter’s first job was in School Daze. I’m not knocking what Regina said, but I have had very diverse crews since way back in the ’80s. So it is not something new to me.”
