Sad news for Kanye West fans excited to check out his rumored headlining performance at Coachella 2019. The rapper reportedly pulled out due to a dispute over stage design with the festival’s production company, Goldenvoice.

As TMZ reports, Kanye backed out when the company refused to alter the size of the stage to suit his creative vision.

Sources said that during deliberations, Kanye was pushing to expand the size of its traditional 60×40 foot stage, claiming it was “artistically limiting” and “archaic,” adding that it was “the same type of stage on which Shakespeare’s works were performed hundreds of years ago.”

Instead, Goldenvoice chose not to change the stage, fearing it would “compromise the other acts.” When it was clear the two wouldn’t be coming to an agreement, Kanye decided to pull out.

Whatever vision Kanye was going for, it was must have really been complicated. The festival doesn’t exactly have a track record of inhibiting artists. Last year, Beyonce’s headlining performance at Coachella was anything but traditional. Queen Bey recruited a whole marching band and built a 105-minute performance horns and nonstop drum lines.

Coachella organizers are expected to give a full lineup of performances this week.
