Former President George H.W. Bush Dead at 94

The 41st president of the United States, George Herbert Walker Bush, died yesterday at the age of 94, reports the Washington Post. The former president served one term from 1989 to 1993.

George was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara, who died in April. He was also the father of the 43rd president, George W. Bush, as well as of former Florida governor Jeb Bush.

Many remember his presidency for the 100-hour Iraq war of 1991, which followed Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait. George also presided over the end of the Cold War and a painful American recession, the latter of which likely cost him a second term — losing to Arkansas governor Bill Clinton in 1992.

A controversial figure among liberals, as he got older, George became much more socially liberal. In 2013, he famously served as a witness to the wedding of two women in Maine.

Rest in peace, George.
