Here’s Why China Is Not Releasing Disney’s ‘Christopher Robin’

While most countries around the world are falling in love with the latest Christopher Robin movie, China most certainly is keeping the vault closed.

Apparently, the movie was blocked due to a crackdown on images of the beloved bear last summer. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Chinese authorities reportedly began censoring photos of Winnie the Pooh on social media after people said Chinese leader Xi Jinping resembled the fictional character.

Lately, authorities are said to believe Winnie the Pooh has become a symbol of resistance in China.

“Clamping down on Winnie the Pooh comparisons doesn’t exactly project strength,” John Oliver said during a piece on censorship, mocking the leader’s resemblance to Winnie. “It suggests a weird insecurity.”
