Kate Spade’s Family Is Devastated Following News Of Her Suicide

Kate Spade was found dead today in her apartment by an apparent suicide. Police say she was found hanging from a red scarf in her bedroom, discovered by her housekeeper.

While she left a suicide note, which has yet to be revealed, Kate’s family has since made a statement to New York Daily News.

“We loved Kate dearly and will miss her terribly. We would ask that our privacy be respected as we grieve during this very difficult time,” they said, adding that they’re “devastated by today’s tragedy.”

Lena Dunham, Reese Witherspoon, Chelsea Clinton, Mindy Kaling and others have tweeted memories of the designer.

Kate and her husband both sold their ownership stake in the company in 2007 to focus on family. “I needed a break and I really wanted to raise my daughter [Frances],” she told People magazine. “People asked me, ‘Don’t you miss it?’ I really didn’t. I mean, I loved what I was doing, but I didn’t miss it as much as I thought I might.”
