It was previously announced that Meghan Markle’s dad would be walking her down the aisle — until this week’s fiasco where he staged a photo op for paparazzi blew up in his face. Now he’s choosing not to go to not embarrass Meghan on her special day.

But who’s walking her down the aisle now?

On Tuesday evening, Thomas Markle told TMZ he will be having heart surgery, which would mean he won’t be able to fly to the U.K. in time to attend his daughter’s wedding. “They [doctors] will go in and clear blockage, repair damage and put a stent where it is needed.”

But at the end of the day, it’s becoming what’s more important for the Queen of England.

“I think Harry would want to do what his grandmother sees as appropriate as a sign of respect to her,” says royal wedding expert Caroline Castigliano to Marie Claire. “They just wouldn’t have her mother walk her down the aisle because it wouldn’t be what made the Queen feel comfortable, especially at her age.”

She added, “There’s going to be all sorts of opportunities for Harry to break with tradition and get things to move in a slightly different direction, but at this point I’m sure his respect for the Queen is the most important thing.”
