Cynthia Nixon’s First Campaign TV Interview With Wendy Williams

The Wendy Williams Show

Cynthia Nixon broke it down with Wendy Williams yesterday, vowing to fight for stricter gun-control laws, stand up for black voters, and support the legalization of marijuana, while declaring her candidacy for governor of New York to a screaming audience of Wendy watchers.

Our girl Wendy showed up, shifting her normal talk to one of a seasoned political journalists. In other words, she totally grilled Cynthia about the issues New Yorkers cared about, including about the challenges with going head to head with Andrew Cuomo, a two-term Democrat.

“It is tough,” Cynthia said. “People talk a lot to me about being a celebrity entering this race. I have to say, when Andrew Cuomo ran eight years ago, he was a celebrity because he was the son of Mario Cuomo.”

Past politicians have also appeared on Daytime Talk Shows, so the fact that Cynthia made her first TV interview on The Wendy Williams Show shouldn’t have anyone tilting their heads. (Remember when Obama appeared on The Tyra Banks Show, or The View, or Ellen DeGeneres — as did Hillary Clinton and many others?)

Executive producer, David Perler, told Variety, “We don’t normally book political guests, but Cynthia is a special case of politics intersecting with our hot topics.”

When Wendy brought up Stephon Clark, an unarmed 22-year-old black man who was shot and killed by police in Sacramento, Calif, she asked: “Is this a black man thing?”

“Yes, I think it is,” Cynthia replied, criticizing politicians for not speaking enough about these tragedies. “If we are going to say black lives matter, we have to mean it.”

“How do black women help you become governor?” Wendy asked.

“They are the cornerstone, they are the backbone of the Democratic Party and we need to let them lead,” she said. “Black women are going to stop showing up for the Democratic Party if the Democratic Party doesn’t show up for them.”

The full interview airs today, Wednesday April 4.
